SMTPeter Overview

SMTPeter is a cloud based email gateway which takes care of sending your emails. You can choose to send email via the REST API or the SMTP API.

The application has an extensive dashboard where you can configure your settings and obtain statistics and other information about your account. This is also the place where you can create and store email templates.

SMTPeter uses the concept of "Sender Domains" to simplify email. This allows you to send your email through our servers without having to worry about complicated things like SPF, DKIM and DMARC. The sender domain confirms that we are sending email on your behalf. Email receivers send daily DMARC reports back to SMTPeter in which they tell how many emails failed the DKIM, SPF or DMARC checks. These daily reports are processed by SMTPeter and presented on a dashboard. It allows you to monitor whether your configuration is valid, and/or whether your domain is being abused.

Mail that you send via SMTPeter is preprocessed by MailerQ and then forwarded to the actual recipient. This normally happens in a fraction of a second. However, sometimes SMTPeter deliberately delays your mail a little. If you send too many emails in too little time receiving email clients might block your address. SMTPeter prevents this. The big email receivers (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, et cetera) use special algorithms to detect strange behavior from senders. If such an algorithm notices that someone starts sending large volumes of email they block further deliveries because this unexpected behavior could just as well be a sign that a computer has been hijacked and that someone started sending spam from it. SMTPeter however has special throttling algorithms to ensure that mail is always delivered at a steady rate. We know of each receiver how many emails they can process. If you send mail to SMTPeter at a higher rate than the receiver can process we use internal buffers to delay your message a little.
